Practical Accounting in ERPNext

ERPNext is a serious stockkeeping and accounting system. It implements many complex, flexible and innovative workflow that can satisfy the needs of organizations across multiple entities and jurisdictions. None of that is obvious from the available resources. What exists tends to describe where to click and which fields to fill in. It rarely explains what the system is actually doing to the ledgers, why a particular workflow is structured the way it is, or when a feature is the right tool for a given situation. For an accounting professional trying to understand whether ERPNext will do what they need, or trying to diagnose why it posted something unexpected, that gap represents a real problem.

This guide is a attempt to close this gap and establish a resource for the community. The target audience is accounting professionals and business managers who already know how to read a balance sheet and close a period, and who want to understand ERPNext on those terms. While helpful to software developers, this publication is intended to be context rather than content. Generally it reflects ERPNext version 15 and the corresponding releases of Frappe Framework and HRMS and behavior may differ in earlier or later versions. Corrections and contributions are welcome.
